Have you ever gone to put a hat on and it doesn't fit with your hairstyle or had a sunburnt head and wished you wore a hat instead of worrying about your hair?
Sound familiar?
From these frustrations the Hylani design was created.
We aimed to create a practical and comfortable hat that can be worn with most hairstyles whilst still providing protection from the harsh Aussie Sun.
The Hylani Design comprises a large insert that spans from the rear of a hat towards the front of the crown which easily allows for most hairstyles to be worn without compromising the fit of the hat or protection from the sun, even a very high ponytail/bun!
The Hylani journey commenced in January 2023 with initial prototype development using hot glue guns and a total lack of creative flair, through to meetings with patent lawyers and sourcing companies. We made it our mission to create a unique collection of hats that get "More hats on more heads".
There is so much more to our story, past and future, and we can't wait to share it with you!
Life in Full Sun!
Life is lived best when out in the sunshine whether it be taking the dogs for a walk, boating, lunching with friends, at the beach or in the pool!
Having grown up in a very active outdoorsy family the sun has always been a big part of my life. But I still remember not wanting to wear a hat during my teenage years as heaven forbid it would not suit my hairstyle choice!
Fast forward to having teenage daughters of my own and yep, up against the very same issues! The thought of my daughters having another burnt scalp where their hair parts makes me cringe. From when my daughters were very young we spent a lot of time at the beach, in the boat and beside the pool and they became accustomed to wearing a bandana headband to protect their hair part from the sun. Easy when they are younger, not so cool once they get older.
This was along time before my father started fighting skin cancers. Little did I know then the true impact the sun can have on our skin, I mean we all know the dangers of sun exposure and the need to Slip, Slop, Slap but seeing someone fight skin cancers is a slap of reality. After years of dealing with the occasional slow growing BCC, in 2017 Dad saw a sudden change in his skin cancers with the BCC’s becoming aggressive and SCC’s deciding to join in. The worst of them, yep on the scalp, right where I have always been most paranoid about getting burnt! Won’t go into the finer details as not the prettiest, but the first operation lasted over 10 hours and meant he had to have an open wound to the skull for 12 months! Since then, Dad has undergone more than 40 skin cancer operations, so needless to say I have gone from being worried about a sunburnt scalp to making it my mission to help others prevent it!
But I must admit, when cramming in a quick walk during the week I do not always have time to change my hairstyle to be able to wear my run of the mill baseball cap, so I reach for my open top sun visor and risk the same sunburnt scalp I lecture my daughters about and feel so strongly against!
There was born the HYLANI by Thirsdaze 😊 A hat that can be worn with most hairstyles, all hair thicknesses, is super comfortable and most importantly protects your scalp from the sun! The goal - “More hats on more heads” because everyone needs protection from the sun!

Finally a hat that fits!
All my life I’ve never been a “hat wearer” which is ironic as I am a redhead and burn quite easily in the sun.
Every trip out to the lake or beach and every time I pack the caravan to head away, the same dilemma arises - everyone has a hat except me. Well I do own a sun visor and a cap my partner bought me 8 years ago, but I’ve only worn the cap twice as 99% of the time my abundance of thick hair is in a high bun or ponytail. The practicality of having to take my hair out or readjust it every time I want to put a cap on basically makes full coverage hats useless to me. So, the sun visor is always my go to - but my hair gets SO hot and if I have it parted then it burns so fast!
That’s where the Hylani design became more than just an idea.
As the years have gone by the importance of sun safety has become more apparent - yearly skin checks, friends getting moles removed and the awareness of the result of our teenage years in the sun.
With the Hylani design we aim to get ‘More hats on more heads’ helping others to protect themselves from the extreme Australian sun.
There have been so many instances whilst working on the Hylani design over the past 2 years that we have said “If only I had a Hylani” and now we do, and you can too 😊
